The Pension Sector in Nigeria is challenged by lots of problems which seems insurmountable for decades.

The Association of Pension Desk Practitioners of Nigeria (ASSOPEP) is born out of the necessity to solve serious problems affecting the pension sector in Nigeria namely:

  1.  Many workers are unable to access their pension early enough after retirement.
  2.  Some are not able to complete their pension documentation properly thus denying themselves the right to access their Retirement Savings Accounts (RSA)
  3.  Non-Remittance of deducted contributed pension to Pension Fund Administrators/Custodians (PFA/PFC) by state actors
  4.  Huge Pension arrears by states under the defined pension scheme leading to the untimely death of Pensioners.
  5.  Huge Fraud and Mismanagement of Pension Fund
  6.  Payment to Ghost Pensioners while genuine Pensioners are allowed to suffer and die.
  7.  Lack of capacity to deliver by Pension Desk Administrators due to poor training.
  8.  Lack of professionalism amongst Pension desk staff
  9.  Lack of Advocacy in favour of Pensioners

The Association (ASSOPEP) will confront these challenges by carefully implementing its Objectives:

  1.  To enhance the expertise of Pension Desk Officers through continuous training and capacity building.
  2.  To have a forum to enlighten our members and the public on Pension matters
  3.  To create a Pension Issues Solution Hub in each State of the Federation
  4.  To train all staff in Pensionable work to know their rights and obligations under the Pension law.
  5.  To advocate for early payment of retirees and Pensioners 
  6.  Through advocacy to seek for release of contributed pension funds according to law by state actors.
  7.  Update members on recent developments about programmed withdrawal and Annuity
  8.  Discuss better ways of handling death benefits
  9.  Equip members on the rights and privileges of Retirement Savings Accounts (RSA) holders
  10.  Enlighten members on management, regulation and updates on the current pension scheme
  11.  To assist members to know the nitty-gritty of pension administration
  12.  To assist members to be professional in handling pension matters
  13.  To equip members with working tools for pension management
  14.  To expose members to current trends in pension administration

Membership Criteria

Associates (APP)

Applicants for Associates must be an Individual Member of the Association and must comply with the requirements described below:

1. Educational Achievement
Proof of sufficient formal or practical education, both in quantity and quality.

2. Formal Education – A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.


3. Practical Education – Applicants without degrees may substitute or augment their formal education with practical education derived from service. This practical education requires any two-year combination of:

  1. Formal college education.
  2. Registration with Pension Funds Administrators.
  3. Working experience in a Pensionable Organisation.
  4. Workshop - Attend Onsite or Online Course and Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the pension profession, and general proficiency in handling pension and retirement matters.
  5. Written Test – A written test must be taken under the auspices of the ASSOPEP. This test consists of a series of questions, all of which must be answered.
  6. Personal Interview - Each candidate must be interviewed by a fellow of the ASSOPEP who will examine the candidate's knowledge and understanding of the profession as well as their willingness to accept the responsibility of certification.
  7. Ethical Oath - An assurance from the applicant that the ASSOPEP Code of Ethics will guide performance in the future and that they are prepared to conform to all covenants. This oath will be recorded in the form of a signed pledge. 

Member (MPP)

Applicants for Full Member must be an Individual Member who has to meet the requirements of being an Associates Also must comply with the additional requirements described below:

1. Higher Degrees, APP or Membership of other professional body 

2. A working experience in a senior or management position for at least 7 years

Fellow Member (FPP)

Applicants for Fellow must be an Individual Member who has to meet the requirements of being a full member. Besides, must comply with the requirements described below:

1. Business experience in a senior or management position for at least 15 years

2. A remarkable contribution made in promotion of Pension in the industry and nation at large,
